How to write Reddit replies that answer the question
A useful Reddit reply addresses the author’s specific situation and adds a point the existing answers have missed. Start with that point, explain enough for someone to act on it, and remove claims you cannot support. If you use an AI draft, check every sentence before publishing it under your name.
Identify the decision behind the question
A post titled “How do I improve retention?” may describe users leaving before they finish importing their data. General advice about newsletters misses that detail. The immediate question is why the import blocks the first useful result and how to investigate it.
Before drafting, write a private sentence describing what the author needs to decide. For this example: “Find out whether people understand the import step or abandon it because it takes too long.” That sentence gives your reply a scope and makes irrelevant advice easier to remove.
Make one point concrete enough to use
An illustrative reply could be: “Check where people stop in the import. If most leave before uploading a file, show a sample result before asking for their data. If they leave while the upload runs, investigate the wait and error messages first.” This example is hypothetical; it is not an observed customer result.
The reply offers a way to distinguish two causes instead of assuming one. It also leaves room for the author to respond with more context. You can add detail when the conversation calls for it, rather than trying to cover every possible retention problem in the first comment.
Keep experience and affiliation honest
Do not turn a suggestion into a personal success story unless it happened. “I would check the import step” and “we fixed this by changing the import step” make different claims. An AI assistant can make the second sentence sound convincing without having evidence for it.
If your product is relevant and the community permits mentioning it, explain your affiliation plainly. Check whether the answer still helps when the product name is removed. If there is no useful answer left, reconsider the contribution. Disclosure does not override community rules or make unwanted promotion acceptable.
Give the draft a short editing pass
Read the reply next to the original post. Remove repeated context, generic praise, and any sentence that could fit almost any thread. Check names, numbers, product capabilities, and links. Then read the existing replies once more so you do not publish an answer someone just gave.
For an assistant’s writing instructions, supply observable preferences: “answer the question first,” “do not invent experience,” and “include one concrete next step when appropriate.” Save examples of edits you accepted and explain why. Those examples are more usable than asking the assistant to sound authentic without defining what that means.
